"The Delights of Learning Turkish." - Y. Esendal Kuzucu.I have been leaning Turkish for 35 years and over that time I have purchased and studied many books and courses about the Turkish Language both by native Turks and foreign writers. This book is streets ahead of them all.It can be used as a learning tool for beginners and for reference for advanced students. There are many exercises and explanations together with lots of examples. Basic Turkish grammar is explained clearly without any technical linguistic terms. If you work through all the exercises and explanations for a second time then you can reach the intermediate stage of learning Turkish in a very short time. This book is a must for any serious student. In each unit there is a block Turkish text which introduces the grammar (Turkish) points and related vocabulary. These texts are excellently written to ensure that the reader can put into practice his received knowledge up to that point. To my mind the logical progression of these texts is one of the many highlights of this brilliant book.I take my hat off to Esendal bey for an excellent course and appreciation of the Turkish language. This book deserves far more stars the five maximum which are allowed. I just wish it had been available in my own early learning days.John Guise , New Zealand - Author "The Turkish Language Explained for English Speakers"

I don't usually take the time to write book reviews on Amazon, unless the book is REALLY good! Well this is one of those times! I have been trying to get my head around the Turkish Language for the past few years. You would think that a language that is completely phonetic and written in the Latin Alphabet would give an English Speaker an advantage when learning it. It does not! Turkish is an agglutinative language. Basically this means that it pretty much makes a whole sentence and expresses in two or three words. And many time in just one word! Why so few words - because they cram all the words of a sentence together in a series of suffixes to make nice long words. Words that take the english speaking mind minutes to pick apart! You literally have to learn to think a little differently. It is not impossible - it just takes a little training. I am making progress - but not as fast as I usually do with other languages (Portuguese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic and several others). I have purchased over 35 books on learning Turkish in my journey. Some of them old and out of print, several published in Turkey for school children or Immigrants, and just about all the other newer "usual suspects" for learning a language. I only wish that I could have found this book first! It is absolutely the best book available to learn Turkish. Where do I start - it is logically set up with great vocabulary. The Grammar is really explained well - so that anyone could understand it. The exercises all make sense and they all have an answer key. Even the type face in the book seems to help with reading the lessons! The only thing lacking is an audio component. But Turkish is a totally phonetic language (like Spanish!) and you can easily get pronunciation practice from many other sources and courses available on Amazon. In short, buy this book! You will not be sorry and you will even learn Turkish!

I do not regret buying this book. I was slightly nervous starting with teaching myself Turkish because it is more different than what I'm used to, even though I'm a self-taught learner of Italian and German and have managed to reach a B2-C1 level well within a year to a year and a half with each. This book is very well organized and similar to the books I used for Italian and German in terms of its layout: seperated in "Units", introducing grammar concepts, weaved in with a few culture concepts, gradually in a logical, easy-harder way. I've noticed the vocabulary provided with the grammar can tend to be a bit more advanced than what I find fits my learning level (for example, not even knowing how to use the verb "to have" yet introducing words beforehand like conversational phrases and words relating to more advanced topics---"suffering", "to expire", "forgiveness", etc--- though I understand learners don't have to go page-by-page in order like I tend to do as part of my learning style). It is just something I noticed that has stood out to me a bit more. However, other than this the book is very comprehensive with helpful charts, excercises, and a dictionary in the back of it. It seems I am on the right track to reaching a solid intermediate level by the time I will have seen all the concepts provided by the book. Definitely the top source that I have used since beginning my journey with Turkish 3 months ago.

This book can be used as a beginning Turkish course or as a reference book. But it can also be used, as I am doing, to review and fill in the blanks after taking the Duolingo Turkish course. Indeed, from comments I read within the Duolingo course, other people who took that course also consider this book for the same purpose, because of its good reputation.I am impressed by the book's clear explanations and numerous examples and exercises. The only improvement I'd like to see is links between each set of exercises and their answers, to make it easier to flip back and forth when the book is read on a Kindle device or app.

I have bought almost every book available for learning Turkish and apart from this one and John Guise's book, found them all very old-fashioned - uninteresting and awkward. The Delights....has very clear and helpful grammar explanations followed by excellent exercises where the student can self-correct. I would buy just these two and a decent dictionary and the Turkish verb book.

From the Back Cover

"If you really loved me..." "After all I've done for you..." "How can you be so selfish..." Do any of the above sound familiar? They're all examples of emotional blackmail, a powerful form of manipulation in which people close to us threaten to punish us for not doing what they want. Emotional blackmailers know how much we value our relationships with them. They know our vulnerabilities and our deepest secrets. They are our mothers, our partners, our bosses and coworkers, our friends and our lovers. And no matter how much they care about us, they use this intimate knowledge to give themselves the payoff they want: our compliance. Susan Forward knows what pushes our hot buttons. Just as John Gray illuminates the communications gap between the sexes in Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and Harriet Lerner describes an intricate dynamic in The Dance of Anger, so Susan Forward presents the anatomy of a relationship damaged by manipulation, and gives readers an arsenal of tools to fight back. In her clear, no-nonsense style, Forward provides powerful, practical strategies for blackmail targets, including checklists, practice scenarios and concrete communications techniques that will strengthen relationships and break the blackmail cycle for good.

Great book, I bought this because I have a family member that has been a toxic person since I was a child. Happens to be my mother's sister and the amount of manipulation and making your feel guilty and a host of other things she does is ridiculous. She also tries to brainwash my mother against me, some pretty twisted crap to say the least. The book gives all these example stories and I got frustrated thinking "but this doesn't apply to me " keep reading, swear to God you have to. Towards the end it uses all the stories to explain the "why" of these behaviors. It all comes together and makes sense and if you hadn't stuck with it and read all the examples you would be lost. Very helpful book, you may never find out what truly drives their behavior but you will find out how they manipulate and hurt you and what you need to do to stop it. I've since leant this book to my mother in hopes she will start standing up for herself. Because she takes way too much crap from her sister than she ever should. I do not anticipate you will get nothing from this book, you will gain knowledge, but you have to put it to use. Stop taking people's bs. End the headaches, stress and anxiety these types of people cause. Be good to yourself. Best of luck to you all, if you are considering this book OR know someone in a horrible situation.

Great book! I can now see what I thought. Let me explain. My own family didn't do this to us kids growing up. We were happy secure children. But my husbands family..., they were raised with criticism, guilt and so on. So I married into this family not knowing until after the marriage that they were all like this. I didn't know how to handle this, and even after reading this book I struggle with it. They tell me I'm "thin skinned". Nope! I'm not the one with the problem, it's they who have it.I encourage anyone who is struggling like myself to buy this book. It helps you understand so much! Good read!!

I have a masters in forensic psychology and this is one of my all time favorite books on spotting manipulation tactics. It is a powerful book in its content. I have a 2000 book library, and this is absolutely one of my favorite books on any subject, but especially within the field of psychology. I copied and pasted a bit of my notes for you below to give you a better sense for this book:At the heart of emotional blackmail is an unspoken threat which seeks to coerce compliance with an unjustified demand. In responding to it, we must first come to the realization that there is a difference between making someone suffer and letting someone suffer by their own hand, their own deeds, and their own character. Allowing someone to continue in their own suffering can in fact allow them the necessary opportunity in which to learn the necessary lessons. Rescuing people from themselves not only harms us, it harms them in that it keeps them from learning their lessons.Let people suffer. Do not intervene between a person’s actions and his own consequences.Disapproval is ultimately the key to emotional blackmail. In a way, fear, guilt, and obligation pray on our sense of approval. Disapproval is another person’s means of manipulating us by making the relationship contingent upon our appeasement of their unjustified demands and submission to injustice and purposeful manipulation.Emotional blackmail preys on fear, obligation, and guilt. Its manipulation tactics are either based on instilling fear, or obligation based on guilt. Whether that fear or obligation is real or justifiable is of no importance- only submission is required. Emotional blackmailers use our conscience against us in terms of guilt, and our sense of responsibility against us in terms fo obligation, and our desire for harmony in terms of fear- whether that fear be based on disapproval or their unjustified anger.

The main message in this book is about going from point A; - being a victim unconscious of how your own behavior can contribute to sending the wrong messages to "Blackmailers", to point B;- being more conscious and centered in how you choose to respond thereby stepping out of the victim role. Its about how to achieve empowerment in the face of seemingly impossible situations. I just wish there were some guidance about how to be kind to you if you realize that you may be doing some blackmailing yourself. It's interesting also that specific mental illness labels are not attributed to the blackmailers. I haven't decided if this helps or hinders the message. The sun has not yet risen in the dark forest I find myself lost in. Yet, this book has become my predawn light. I can begin to see there are more paths than the one I've been on. ;-} Overall, this book is practical, practicable, and effective.

Very useful and informative book - amazing actually. I have recommended this book to over two dozen people. I would bet, dollars to donuts, that everyone has a person or persons in their lives who use emotional tactics to get what they want - even if it is unfair, steps on boundaries, is cruel, insensitive (and then loving and apologetic afterwards). Often people think that they have done something wrong, or for the sake of the relationship and "peace" that they must comply with such demands and outrageous behavior. JUST SAY NO! Allowing others to manipulate with emotional blackmail only makes them want to do it more (and it gets harder to break the cycle). Read this book and understand how it works with emotionally manipulative people. If you get what this book is telling you, your life WILL change!!! IF, on the other hand, you are operating with emotional blackmail (maybe it;s all you know, maybe it's the way you were raised) then you will either not be interested in this book (cuz changing would be too risky), or you might be ready to expand your emotional intelligence and learn more about yourself and how you process life and get your needs met (at the expense of others). This book is amazing!

This is my second time through The Dip. I really glad I read it a second time (I think the first was a CD). I liked it before. I loved it this time. In his closing comments, Seth Godin said that "Short books are hard to write." I can attest to that as a writer. As a consumer, I sometimes feel cheated that I paid so much for a small book. In this case, there is no need to feel cheated. What the consumer is buying is the content, the concepts, the ideas. And this small book contains big ideas, ones I don't recall ever seeing before Seth Godin had the insights and courage to present.I too have heard Vince Lombardi's famous advice throughout my lifetime: "Winners never quit; quitters never win." Like most great sounding platitudes, they aren't complete or in-depth This book, The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick), teaches you that you need to quit strategically under two major conditions, you are in a cul-de-sac (dead end) or about to face a cliff. Otherwise, to be the best in "the world," you need to push through the "dip" or find the shortcut through it. Quitting strategically isn't failing; it's conserving your energy and resources to go after a dip you can push through.I particularly liked that he also specified that you need to evaluate your available resources and the size of the marketplace and the size of your competition in that marketplace. Define a "world" that you can be the best in, as Sara Lee did. "In the Netherlands, a much smaller market, Senseo has reached a 40-percent market share of all households."

This book saved me from spending thousands of dollars on executive coaching. It was so on point. Every confusing question that was swirling in my head was answered by this book. It was quick and to the point. Absolutely perfect. One of the most satisfying reads ever. Life changing. I had to keep replaying the audio over and over again because every other sentence was a light bulb moment. The information wasn't rocket science- it just gave me the clarity I sorely needed at exactly the right time. If you're still confused about whether you should stay or go after reading this book something is wrong with you!

A short read, but a very powerful read. Anything by Seth Godin has always turned out to be a treasure and in some aspect a life changer for me. I recently read another of his books The Dip which really gave a me a lot to think about. As always, I have purchased almost every single Seth Godin book and they are books that will never be discarded because they are the few books I read over and over.Seth Godin takes on the topic of quitting and places the whole idea into a whole new perspective. There is always talk about failure and quitting on social media and in particular education. This book challenges many of the common ideas often discussed. Here are some of the key ideas that stood out to me in no particular order that will hopefully inspire you to read the book for yourself and provide some ideas for you to think about.1. Never quitting is bad advice. Right from the start he argues one of the most common ideas quoted time and time again. He says that the quote from Vince Lombardi, “Quitters never win and winners never quit.” is bad advice. Instead he claims that winners “quit all the time. They just quit the right stuff at the right time.”2. Zipf’s Law – This law is mentioned in the book so I had to look it up on wikipedia. I am instantly fascinated by this concept where we basically love winners. Not just winners, but the whole idea that frequency is key. When something wins it usually wins big. Think about the popular records, box office, tv shows, books, etc. The top of the top sell more than anyone else. You could be 2nd or third, but end up way behind. Now that I aware of this law I start to notice it time and time again.3. Well Rounded is Bad Advice – Anytime education is challenged my ears perk up. Seth states, “Just about everything you learned in school about life is wrong, but the wrongest thing might very well be this: Being well rounded is the secret to success.” I have to agree 100%. I shared this graphic a few posts back and also here specifically about this topic so reading this book after further cemented my beliefs.Who are You-4. The Cul-De-SacI love this thought. I really do. And I think it is the state of education. Basically it means a “situation where you work and you work and nothing much changes. It doesn’t get a lot better, it doesn’t get a lot worse. It just is.” Not only is this happening in education, but it happens in our own personal lives. This idea seems so simple and yet I keep going back to it. I think it goes much deeper once you move past the surface of simply a definition. Sometimes we have to get on the highway….(my new idea developing from this neighborhood metaphor)5. I think that the reason many live in a cul-de-sac is because it is easy to be mediocre. It is easy to blend in. Quitting is hard because you must admit that you are not number one. This is tough for many of us. We don’t like to admit these type of things so we will continue to do things just so we are not quitters. Our society has pushed our thinking to believe that quitting is bad.6. The key to quitting is understanding The Dip. We must learn when to quit. We don’t want to quit at the wrong time. We have to realize that the systems in place want us to quit. They operate on us quitting. If we can push past the dip and not quit, then we hit the results of being number one. We breakthrough and hit new levels of success that cannot we believe we can achieve. What is the dip? Well, read the book!7. The one idea that makes sense, but I struggle with agreeing with is if we are going to quit we must quit before we start. If we cannot be the best in the world he suggests we don’t even try. I don’t know how I feel about that. I think we have to shoot for the stars sometimes. Perhaps I must define what it means to be the best in the world. Does this mean I must be an Olympian in running? No, I think he is going after something much grander in concept, but it is important to at least think about the message. When thinking about quitting we have to think about…….8. Two Choices – Don’t be average. If you find yourself being average you must make a decision. Either you quit or be exceptional. “Average is for losers”. This is a tough pill to swallow, but a necessary one. I think about my life and things that I want to fix. If I quit the things that are just average in my life due to average work and commitment I could really push some elements to be exceptional by freeing up time and energy spent on doing things average in my life in the cul-de-sac. This idea is one that has hit home with me and is really forcing me to think through things deeply. Those are just a few ideas that really stood out to me when I finished the book. I have many more passages highlighted, but if I shared everything then what would be the point to read the book? This book packs a lot in 80 pages, but that is what Seth Godin does.If you are interested in his other books here are the others I have read and recommend. My favorite book of his so far. I have read this one many times! Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin http://amzn.to/1IxiiLKOh man, this one is so good also! Purple Cow by Seth Godin http://amzn.to/1IxilYaPoke the Box by Seth Godin http://amzn.to/1JFluKL

I reached the dip by page 33 when I realized that the shallow waters Godin is treading weren't going to get any deeper. About then Godin asks, "are you angry." Darn right! I'm mad at Godin for spewing pop psychology; I'm mad at other reviewers who treat this as revelatory; and I'm at myself for buying this book. That's a lot of anger for such a little book.

This is a very interesting little book. The ideas are, in some sense, obvious, but isn’t almost everything after someone has pointed it out. I found numerous meaningful points of inspiration for my own situation. More tellingly, perhaps, after reading the book, I immediately shared it with a family member who is confronting the Dip/Cul-Del-Sac conundrum right now. I hope this little book, but providing essentially a structure for analysis, can help him figure out the best path.

Are you feeling stuck? The Dip is for you! These words of wisdom may just be exactly what you need to get your butt in gear. I am feeling stuck in a dead end job that gives no recognition for the good I do, but it's quick to highlight any mistake I might make. I decided, before reading The Dip, that there must be a better way. There is! And, I'm going to #StriveForGreatness in my next endeavor ready to quit this dip as soon as I can. Read it. It might give you the best you need.

Promises to teach you when to quit something. Defines when you should not quit as only when you can be the best at something. How can you know early on that you cannot be the best at something? Every great venture that ultimately became best hadn’t a clue early on. They zigged and zagged, tried one thing then another, and 20 years later, after countless failures, become number one. But had no idea in the beginning how or if they would survive or succeed.
