In this exquisite monograph, world-renowned illustrator and character designer Peter de Sève shows his favorite published and unpublished works. Inventive, eccentric, and often irreverent, they represent a lifetime of drawing . . . a very sketchy past. The imagery that springs from his pen marries colorful personalities with expert storytelling, and wild flights of imagination with a masterly drawing technique that harkens back to a bygone era of impeccable draftsmanship and craft. Copiously illustrated with hundreds of paintings and drawings, including never-before-published New Yorker cover roughs, behind-the-scenes animation development artwork, and personal sketches, A Sketchy Past is the first comprehensive survey of de Sève's work. A career-spanning biographical essay written by historian Amid Amidi, along with comments from de Sève throughout the book, offer a unique insight into his approach to illustration and his artistic process.

At any given moment, de Sève is juggling multiple projects for clients that range from book and magazine publishers to animation studios, and often he can be found working in his home studio into the wee hours of the morning. He is in high demand because there are few artists who can do what he does: insightful, evocative illustration that achieves its effect without graphic tricks or gimmickry. His approach is unapologetically classical, and it is clear from his work that de Sève relishes, above all else, solid draftsmanship, characterization, and storytelling. He has a keen eye for capturing the mannerisms of characters, both human and animal. The de Sève touch may be no more than a subtle tilt of the head, a quirky off-balance pose, or an exaggeration of a facial feature, but those expressive penwork flourishes are all that is needed. His characters inhabit a world that is believable as our own, yet at the same time out of reach, colored with a natural sense of fun, warmth, and humanity.
